The Jomolhari Trek is one of Bhutan’s most spectacular Himalayan adventures, taking you deep into pristine mountain landscapes, remote valleys and traditional highland communities. The journey follows ancient trails through lush forests, alpine meadows and rugged terrain, with breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari and surrounding snow-capped peaks.
Over six days, trek through the beautiful landscapes of Shana, Thangthangkha, Jangothang, Soi Yaktsa and Thombu Shong before completing the adventure at Gunitsawa Village. Along the way, experience Bhutan’s unique mountain culture, encounter yak herders, cross high mountain passes and enjoy unforgettable views of the Himalayas. With a dedicated acclimatisation day at Jangothang, this trek offers a rewarding combination of adventure, nature and authentic Bhutanese wilderness.
Day 1: Shana (Approx. 2,800 m) to Thangthangkha
Your Jomolhari adventure begins at Shana, where the trail follows the Pa Chhu River through beautiful forests of pine, oak and rhododendron. The route crosses traditional wooden bridges and passes through small settlements, offering a peaceful introduction to Bhutan’s remote Himalayan landscape.
As you gradually gain altitude, the valley becomes narrower and the scenery more dramatic. After a rewarding day of trekking, arrive at Thangthangkha, a beautiful campsite surrounded by forest and mountains.

Day 2: Thangthangkha to Jangothang
Today, the trail continues northwards along the Pa Chhu River. The dense forests gradually give way to open alpine landscapes as you climb higher into the Himalayas.
Along the way, you may encounter yak herders and their camps, providing a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of Bhutan’s highland communities. By afternoon, you reach Jangothang, one of the most spectacular campsites on the trek, with magnificent views of Mount Jomolhari and the surrounding peaks.

Day 3: Jangothang Halt & Explore
Today is dedicated to acclimatisation and exploration around Jangothang. Take a well-deserved break and allow your body to adjust to the high altitude.
For those feeling energetic, explore the surrounding valley and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and other Himalayan peaks. You may also encounter yak herders and discover more about life in this remote high-altitude region.
The peaceful surroundings and dramatic mountain scenery make Jangothang one of the highlights of the entire trek.

Day 4: Jangothang to Soi Yaktsa
After breakfast, continue your journey deeper into the high Himalayas. Today’s trail takes you through rugged alpine terrain, with spectacular mountain scenery surrounding you throughout the day.
The route includes a challenging ascent towards Nyile La, one of the high mountain passes along the Jomolhari Trek. From the higher sections of the trail, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks before descending towards the beautiful Soi Yaktsa valley.

Day 5: Soi Yaktsa to Thombu Shong
Today’s trek takes you through remote alpine landscapes and across another high mountain pass. The trail winds through open valleys, yak grazing grounds and rugged Himalayan terrain.
As you make your way towards Thombu Shong, the scenery remains spectacular, with snow-capped peaks, high-altitude meadows and vast mountain valleys creating an unforgettable trekking experience.
After reaching the campsite, relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Thombu Shong.

Day 6: Thombu Shong to Gunitsawa Village, Paro
Yay! We did it! 🎉
Today marks the final day of your Jomolhari Trek. After breakfast, begin the descent towards Gunitsawa Village. The trail gradually moves into greener landscapes as you leave the high-altitude wilderness behind.
Enjoy the final stretches of the trek, reflecting on the incredible mountains, valleys, forests and remote communities you have encountered along the way. Upon reaching Gunitsawa Village, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Paro.
